The chapel deteriorated in the late 1960s and by the late 1970s, a group of concerned local residents, led by Judith Long (nee Creegan) formed a Trust to restore the building. 04 Jun 2006
1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Huia Museum is open on Sunday 4th June, World Heritage Day.

Huia museum is largely dedicated to interpreting the events associated with the shipwreck, Orpheus. On February 7 1863, the HMS Orpheus was only miles from its destination in Auckland. Many of the passengers were soldiers heading for the Waikato Land Wars. The harbour bar at the head of the Manukau Harbour was a sandbank that was known to be treacherous. The ship took a course too far to the south of the bar to cross it safely and the nose of the ship was buried in the sand bar. The Orpheus is New Zealand's worst maritime disaster with 189 passengers dying and only 70 survived the ordeal.
